Back in 1994, New Balance tasked their youngest designer—Stephanie Howard, then just 21—with devising a shoe that would appeal to her own demographic. Her answer was the 850, at the time considered a radical departure from any New Balance before it. Gone was the iconic “N” logo, replaced by a smaller, more modern “NB” stitched at the heel. That one small change opened up a whole new canvas along the uppers for Howard, and she filled the space with swooping layers of mesh and leather. The risks paid off: The 850 was an immediate hit upon its release in 1996, later garnering a sequel in the equally successful 851 and earning Howard a promotion to New Balance’s lead designer.
